The Bay to Birdwood big breakfast

Our club cooks up a great breakfast for people to purchase at the commencement of the Bay to Birdwood car rally each year. The commencement is down at West Beach and there are thousands of cars on show. Drivers, passengers and friends get there very early, but not as early as us! Our egg and bacon rolls are very popular. This raises funds which we can put towards helping children.

Quiz Night and other events

We have held 2 quiz nights now and these have been quite successful. We have held Tapas Days and other themed days where members and friends have gathered at either a hall or at somebody’s home to have a great fun time and raise funds for children.

We used to have a cocktail party event every year, then we changed it up to a Gala Dinner which was very successful. Due to covid we haven’t held this for a few years now.

Australia Day breakfast

On Australia Day each year, except during the pandemic, we have cooked a big breakfast for anyone down Glenelg way. The most recent was in 2023. We are positioned right in front of the Stamford Grand Hotel. The City of Holdfast Bay Citizenship Ceremony is held there too. One year we were filmed by one of the TV stations and our President was interviewed and appeared on national television.

Lottery tickets

You can help us raise funds by purchasing tickets in the People First Community Lottery. Tickets are just $2 each and all proceeds come back to our club. This year’s to be drawn on 1 August – good luck!

Marshalling

Over many years our club has been asked to provide parking or street closure marshalls for various events – events like the Glenelg Christmas pageant, the Brighton Jetty Classic, the Onkaparinga Christmas pageant (helping our sister club Reynella), Sandcastle competition, the Weetbix Challenge and more. Often a very early start. We are usually paid a fee for these.

Newer ideas for fundraising

Thanks to a great idea by our club President, Alan, the Kiwanis Club of Glenelg often works with Holdfast Bay Council to deliver their rubbish/recycle collection calendars each year to residents’ letterboxes. That’s over 16,000 letterbox drops. They have also asked us to deliver other pamphlets or flyers when there is something they want conveyed to residents. This all came about after President Alan had the idea to have a fridge magnet prepared to deliver to residents – a reminder about which rubbish goes in which bins – and something they can stick on their fridge for glancing at when disposing of rubbish. We needed to run this idea past council and make sure we were giving the correct information, and that’s how it all started. It has been a project we have been able to do even through the covid pandemic. We have won an award for our environmental impact in our local area.

The City to Bay Fun Run

Another fund-raiser is the City to Bay Fun Run where we are positioned down at the finish line ready for runners and walkers to get the water or sports drinks from us. We have a big team of people there ready to pour. The video shows what it looks like – this was a year when we poured Powerade.
